Welcome

I'm so glad you came by. I hope I'll be able to keep things interesting so you'll want to come back for a visit - I love the company!

I have many flowers I will be showing pictures of and a lot of critters that come around looking for a handout. But they give as much as they take since they're so much fun to watch. I always try to have my camera handy hoping for a shot better than the last one.

Comfy As You Please In Our Yard

A while back we had a doe and a couple of her yearlings wandering around our yard and one by one they decided to lay down and get comfy. First was this younger one.

Mom was next to settle in.
The other twin is still thinking about it.
When he does finally lay down from a distance it looks like one deer with 2 heads!
I don't mind them so much in the winter because they are beautiful to watch. But I haven't forgot that in the summer they eat their way through my yard eating my flowers one by one.
I haven't forgotten that one year they chewed my Hardy Geranium back so bad it never did pull out of it and bloom again that year.
And ohhhhhh how they love Columbines.

And how this one bloomed pink one year . . .

And purple another year . . .

But I was almost certain that the year I bought it there were 2 colors blooming. I waited until I just suspected I was nuts and that it couldn't bloom 2 colors. Then the year it finally had 2 buds that told me I had been right and it was going to do it - the deer ate them. That was the only time they finally had me in tears because I had been watching this columbine almost every day and then it was gone. Here's a picture from another year when it bloomed purple and pink.

This Cardinal Song Columbine I no sooner got home from the nursery and it was stripped bare. But this was one piece of work flower because it came back with more blooms than it had before they ate it.
There are years they beat me to the lilies. I don't even get a sniff before they're snuffed!

And this one too . . .

My little crabapple tree still hasn't pulled out of it - 2 blooms last year.
In the winter the deer aren't so bad. We can enjoy watching them and taking pictures because there isn't anything blooming for them to eat. And I haven't forgot how furious I am with them in the summer. But it's really hard to stay mad when you see something as sweet as this!

  1. Linda, I am now having to fight off the deer in my garden. They pulled my shrubs (knockout roses and loropetalum) right out of the ground. The root balls were found in the lake...some of them. I replanted the rootball of one I found...and then sprayed the stinky stuff over EVERYTHING!
Sorry for your lilies and columbine (and all the other flowers)-- what beauties.

  3. They are lovely to watch but are real chomping machines. I know exactly how you feel when they eat those blooms.Maybe you should start chasing them off this winter before they get too use to your yard. LOL! Your Columbines are so gorgeous. I love the pink and the Cardinal ones. And lilies I have come to adore. Take care and have a great week.

  4. OH, deer! We've been lucky, but I know just how destructive they can be. We were invited to a hosta garden walk one year but when we arrived the poor owner was standing by the one, lone hosta survivor in his yard. It was as if the deer knew he was scheduled to be on a big tour and they pulled a fast one. It is amazing how much they can eat! Your flowers are so beautiful, I hope you can do something to deter the deer.

  8. Hi RG, when the music began all I could see was Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue on the beach!

Oh well, back to those great photos of the wildlife and one of my favorite plants, columbine. I had a ton at my other home but none here, why not? I will certainly try to find a spot for some this year.

  9. Dear RG, Love this post! The columbines are so beautiful and the deer look so content. Looking at the last picture I could almost forgive them the damage they do. But maybe not ...

  11. The last picture is so very adorable. I'm sorry they eat so many of your beautiful flowers. That must be so frustrating. :(

  12. I guess they are lucky they are so cute. I would have a hard time forgiving them after eating so many pretty flowers.
    Hope you're doing well!

  13. They obviously took the choicest blooms. What a shame! They look as if geraniums wouldn't melt in their mouths.

  15. Gardening is a beautiful habit and hobby to follow as it gives content to the heart and peace to the mind. Even I have a small garden in my backyard but it is a pond garden. I'm just so envious! It's absolutely beautiful and a sure sign that fairies inhabit your garden!

  17. We always see deer tracks in the snow come winter time, but haven't had any plants munched in summer, so for now, we are safe! Sorry they ate all your lovelies!
