I don't know why I never think to ask for flowers this time of year like Catherine does. Had I of done that I wouldn't be racking my poor ole brain trying to figure out my new iPod Nano. Yup this old grandma's having a real learning experience - now that my daughter and the boys have left. They showed me what they could before they went and I did manage to get 32 oldies transferred to it. Bob and I really enjoyed listening to them in the car yesterday ~ I got some kind of gizmo to make it play through my car speakers. I just wanted a simple little cheap player to take up to my greenhouse and listen to all of the great old music I have and replace the boom box and cds and cassettes. O'well I'm learning and I must admit the sound is just outrageous ~ those old 50's and 60's songs never sounded better!
Ok back to gardening ~ or not! Seems 'not' in the world of Amaryllis. Last year Bob fell in love with the Amaryllis I bought.

He decided he wanted to try and keep it over until this year. He read what he was suppose to do and did that. Then this year he brought it out at the right time and it started growing and looked great. But then the leaves just kept getting taller and finally flopped over and hung down, never reviving no matter what he tried. We don't know what went wrong and it was so sick looking I didn't even take a picture. Guess I'm going to have to head over to visit Kathleen at Kaseys Korner since she knows a lot about them.
My Christmas Cactus bloomed and was very pretty this year.

So when I was shopping one day I saw this one and decided I'd get it thinking maybe Bob would like it since he had felt so bad about his Amaryllis. Isn't this just gorgeous and so delicate looking?
Well, I'm outta here, can't think of anything else to say except it sure is nice to be getting back to normal and doing a post. Now to get back with visiting all of you. Not today because we are heading up the Columbia Gorge to The Dalles to see Bob's brother who is there visiting from California. But rest assured I'll be over to visit all of you soon. I hope it's not too cloudy and foggy so I can get some pictures ~ the scenery on this drive is beautiful.
Thought I'd play one of those oldies on here today.

We had a wonderful Christmas, glad you did too. I'm glad it's over once again and somewhat 'normal' can resume. Our Amaryllis grow outdoors. I don't have much luck with those Christmas cactus...maybe I'll try again.
ReplyDeleteHi RG,
ReplyDeleteI have never kept the amaryllis over to the following year but I know some people are successful doing this. My amaryllis did well and I still have them, but I would have to repot them in soil to keep them. They are expensive to buy, especially the Christmas varieties, so I am debating!
I had trouble finding christmas cactus this year, the nurseries just did not get any, so I have my weak little one that put out a few flowers.

Beautiful amaryllis! We actually have warm enough weather here to plant them outside after they're done brightening the indoors for the winter. I'm impressed by people who try to get them to bloom again as a houseplant.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to recommend that you submit your post with the dahlia 'Mom's Special' for the next issue of How to Find Great Plants. The deadline is December 31st. If you're interested, here's the link:

I didn't have luck with the Amaryllises that I saved from last year either. I love your Christmas Cactus, mine didn't bloom, but it is alive so that's at least something :)
ReplyDeleteSo did you get snow?
Keeping Amaryllis from one year to another is one of life's great mysteries!
ReplyDeleteYour cacti are gorgeous. I want that white one too!
I've grown amaryllis in the past and I've never gotten them to successfully rebloom either. That Christmas cactus is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteHi RG! My amaryllis did the same thing. All leaves and no blooms. Kathleen gave me some tips so I will try again next year.I have six of them so I hate to give up on them yet. I love the new Cactus. It is so delicate looking. Very pretty. Have a Blessed New Year to come!
ReplyDeleteI have trouble getting amaryllis to rebloom. Put them in the compost a couple of years ago. I received three new ones this year, we shall see how they do. Love the white Christmas Cactus, such a pretty white color. Hope you have a wonderful New Year.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that you had a good Christmas! The ipod sounds great. I still haven't figured out how to use mine. The white cactus is lovely.
ReplyDeleteHi Linda, nice to see you back. Good for you to get an Ipod --I still have a CD walkman....and don't use it.
ReplyDeleteLove the Christmas Cactus, wish mine had bloomed. All the buds fell off, (boo hiss) and left me without an blooms.
Ok..now I have to get some house plants, need color.
ReplyDeleteNormal hmmm...I may never be there.
