Welcome

I'm so glad you came by. I hope I'll be able to keep things interesting so you'll want to come back for a visit - I love the company!

I have many flowers I will be showing pictures of and a lot of critters that come around looking for a handout. But they give as much as they take since they're so much fun to watch. I always try to have my camera handy hoping for a shot better than the last one.

Last Buying Binge At Sun And Shade Nursery

I say that now but will it really be? Or will I keep buying flowers right up to the last minute?

I headed over to Sun And Shade Nursery out of Chehalis the other day to look around. This nursery isn't huge and it's not the fanciest but they are real big on customer service, keeping good prices and having alot of neat plants I don't always see at other nurseries. Kim found pink Campanulas for me this spring and she's been trying to get the Clematis I want but apparently everyone is out of it.

Speaking of which, when you first walk over to the flowers the Clematis are there to greet you.

This is Clematis Henryi and what a beauty it is.

Hydrangea Limelight.
Chocolate Creeping Ginny is really pretty with it's dark foliage. Unfortunately I lost mine last year when we had that cold weather for a couple of weeks. I'm going to have to get another one.
Weeping Atlantic Cedar on this one has the contorted trunk which I love.

Phygelius Yellow Sovereign resembles bananas.

Eryngium Jade Frost

Albizia Julibrissin Mimosa

Helichrysum Licorice Splash

Marble Dragon Laurel

Lavendula Silver Edge

This Butterfly Bush (Buddleia) wasn't blooming but it looked so bright and different colored I had to show the ticket for it. It's Bi Color Buddleia.

Sumac Tree

Calluna Vulgaris Yellow Beauty
As I head inside to the where it is mostly annuals here by the door is the biggest Stargazer Lily. I swear it was taller than I am.

They have a little bit of everything here - I can usually find almost anything I want.
How cute is this decorative shoe planter?
Slim mushrooms - can't remember if they nod or not.

Love this rock . . .

Sweet Statue

I like the basket on this tricycle - it's prettier than most I see.
Now this has got to be my favorite sign and I need a whole truck load of 'em - that or I can just keep moving it around to whatever is dying at the moment and set it there.
Ewwwwwwwww now this I don't think I'd buy since I have so many real ones.
Even pink Flamingos can be found here.
Nice arrangements.
And a great selection of Sedums.

But wait! There's more . . .

And more . . .

Very different looking Stoncrop called Chocolate Ball.
Ohhhhh I'm going to have to have this Sedum that resembles a small Autumn Joy only it's varigated and has white to pale pink blooms. It's called Frosty Morn.
And what's this? I did end up with Frosty Morn, a small Creeping Charlie and my new favorite little lady - Coneflower Pink Poodle. Isn't she just adorable? At first I thought she was a Dahlia. I bought Magnus, the big guy, last week and I'll bet they will be a happy little couple.

  1. A lot of nice plants that I would be tempted to buy! I lost a beautiful mimosa to the winter wind and cold. I needed to protect it from winds. The Atlantic cedar looks like great! I hear what you are saying about slugs. This was a good summer for them. I go to the garden at night to 'terminate' them, and sometimes, I have a hundred of them!

  2. Sorry to hear about your Mimosa Tatyana - I lost a lot of stuff this last winter too. I've heard something about getting slugs at night. What do you take out with you? A double barrel shotgun? LOL a container of salt or just a big ugly stick?

  3. I cringed when I saw the mimosa. It is such an invasive plant/tree. I say this because that is the one thing I cannot rid my gardens of. I have a tree in the front I've cut back to a nub on the ground and it comes back growing so fast and spreads itself all over the gardens. It must have small seeds. Also the roots grow deep so all that I pull from my gardens really disturbs the soil.

So many choices there. I would have had to go to the bank and took money out. Uhoh no I can't do that. Anyway those are really nice. Love the butterfly bush. I am ordering some things from Four Seasons this year. They have a clematis to die for "Josephine' and the most awesome daffodils 'Rosy Clouds Daffodil'. Happy gardening.

  4. Becca you're going to love Josephine - I got her a couple of years ago and she is so gorgeous. A little finicky maybe, I've read that and also had to move her a couple times but she's worth it.
I brought back starts from my Mother In Laws Mimosa but they didn't do too well. I guess I'm glad of that now with what I've heard about them. They are pretty though.

  5. Dear Rain Gardener, I was so intrigued by the comment that you left on my weblog that I wanted to take a look for myself at the nursery which you wrote about. Inded, the Sun and Shade Nursery looks to be an absolute gem and I am certain would be a favourite of mine if I lived in the Pacific Northwest.

Clearly Kim values your custom and it so good to have excellent and personalised service. It is, sadly, all too rare these days.

I have signed myself as a 'Follower' in order not to miss any future postings.

  6. I didn't even know there was a chocolate creeping Jenny. How very pretty and unique! Love the smart rock sign.

  7. Hi Edith, thank you for becoming a follower. I hope I can keep it interesting. I've been so busy outside trying to get caught up around here I haven't had as much time to post and visit like I enjoy doing.
Yes, Kim is a gem and I'm so glad I found her place to do my plant shopping.
I also read your previous post on 'Lady Isobel Barnett' and found it so interesting and also very sad about how her life turned out.

  8. Hi Tina, I didn't know there was a Chocolate Creeping Ginny either until I saw it at S&S last year. It is just so pretty and I plan on getting another one and will keep it in the greenhouse I guess. I like to use it in my containers for a great variation of foliage color.

  9. Okay, now I want to go plant shopping instead of back to school shopping which we are headed out to do. That does look like a really nice nursery. I love your new Coneflower!
I swear it already feels like fall around here, this was one weird summer weather wise. I barely have anything left blooming now since none of my usual late summer bloomers came up :(

  10. Well Catherine just come on down and we'll play hooky from school shopping and go buy flowers! HA! I already took the boys shopping and did my part. Now we're waiting for the weather to cool a bit more so we can take them out in the boat!
Wait you have to get those blooms back so I can take pictures when I get there. LOL But you're right we've had some very strange summer weather. I have many 'fried' flowers. My Balloon Flower just started blooming and it looks so wilted I won't even take a picture of it. Strange weather . . .

  11. It would be so difficult not to break the bank at this nursery. I have/had the chocolate ball, it's struggling right now.

  12. I could feel very at home shopping at this nursery. They have some beautiful plants. My daughter just ordered several clematis from an oline nursery called Donahues. They really looked good, deep planting pot and good growth on top. They had many unusual varieties that we can't get locally.

  13. Like you, too many slugs and snails to ever want ornamental ones!
    I'll have that hydrangea, tho.

  14. It would not do for me to go to that place. I would want all those pretty plants. However, this year I did not by many. I am glad as it turned out to be heat hole all summer. I am barley keeping my grass going.

  15. I'm just drooling over all the cool plants. I've been good lately, but now I'm getting the urge again to wander through a good garden center. I planted one of those bicolor buddleias in spring, and it's doing well. Very pretty!
